Astrobiology is a relatively new field of science which examines the possibility of life in the universe beyond Earth. This field of study combines the disciplines of astronomy, biology, and geology to explore the possibility that there may be other forms of life in the universe. By studying the environment around stars, planets, and moons, scientists hope to gain insight into whether or not life could exist on these celestial bodies and whether it could be conceivable that life on Earth could migrate to other planets.

What is Astrobiology?

At its core, astrobiology is the study of the possible origin, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the Universe. It is a combination of astronomy, biology, and geology, with studies taking place in both the field and laboratory settings. Astrobiologists use these disciplines to investigate the nature of, and interaction between, living and non-living beings in the universe. With the integration of these fields, astrobiology can also have implications in fields such as environmental science, planetary science, and geology.

Origin of Life

Astrobiology focuses on the origin of life, an important basis for the study of life in the universe. This includes the exploration of the past and present conditions both on Earth and in the Solar System to see whether or not it is possible for life to be able to exist. Astroecology covers the analysis of the specific environments that may be capable of nurturing life in the universe. This includes the exploration of extreme conditions and atmospheres in which extreme forms of life may be able to survive. Scientists have studied this science in lab settings in order to better grasp the capabilities of life in extraterrestrial conditions. This has also been combined with geology to produce models which can then be applied to other celestial bodies.

Astrogeobiology

Astrogeobiology is a combination of both astrobiology and geobiology, which focuses on the study of the interaction between geology and living organisms. As such, it examines the role of geological features and their impact on the survival and evolution of organisms in space. Examples include investigations into the geological history of Mars and the effects of impact events on the surface of a rocky body.

Bioastronomy

Bioastronomy is the research on the interstellar medium and its effect on the development of life in the universe. This includes the exploration of the chemical and physical nature of the interstellar medium and the potential influence this may have on the emergence and evolution of life.
